New York Giants win first game in new stadium
The New York Giants defeated the Carolina Panthers 31-18 on Sunday in their first regular season game at the New Meadowlands Stadium.
Giants quarterback Eli Manning was able to overcome three interceptions by throwing three touchdown passes and connecting on 20-of-30 passes for 263 yards.
"We fought through some things early on in the game," Manning said. "Offensively we put ourselves in a whole with a bunch of penalties and things, but we stayed positive, we stayed confident and fought through it and made some great plays."
Hakeem Nicks caught all three touchdown passes for the Giants and Ahmed Bradshaw also scored a touchdown and finished the game rushing for 76 yards.
Panthers quarterback Matt Moore also threw three interceptions and finished the game 14-of-33 for 182 yards and one TD. However, Moore left the game late in the fourth quarter after suffering a concussion and was replaced by Jimmy Clausen. Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams rushed for 62 yards on 16 carries.
"There's no question that they made plays and we didn't, and that was the difference." Panthers head coach John Fox said.
The Panthers held a 16-14 edge at the half, but lost the lead on the opening drive of the third quarter. The Giants were able to march down the field on an 11-play, 60-yard drive that was capped off by a 32-yard field goal from Lawrence Tynes.
Late in the quarter, after the Panthers fumbled on a punt, the Giants found themselves in excellent field position and capitalized on the turnover after Manning connected with Nicks on a five-yard TD pass, giving the Giants a 24-16 lead. Bradshaw then scored early in the fourth on a four-yard run, as the Giants began to pull away and the defence took care of the rest.
"It's a tight window down there, advantage defence," Panthers coach John Fox said. "You'd like to see a couple different decisions. It was unfortunate."
Manning also commented on his teams’ defence, which helped mask his three interceptions.
"When you turn the ball over four times you don't expect to win many games," Manning said. "Our defence did a great job, especially in the red zone, getting a couple of turnovers to keep our lead so we can run out the clock. They did a great job of keeping us in the game."
It was a revenge game for the Giants, as the Panthers destroyed the Giants 41-9 in their final game at the old Giants Stadium last year.
