New York Islanders Calvin de Haan Injures Shoulder, out for Season -NHL Update
The New York Islanders will have to play without one of their top prospects as former first round pick of the 2009 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft, Calvin de Haan, reportedly injured his left shoulder during a game in the minor leagues.
De Haan dislocated his left shoulder during a matchup with their minor affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL), the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, and is believed to have been smashed into the sideboards by the opposition, resulting in the serious injury.
He was signed on to a three-year, entry-level contract prior to the 2010-2011 NHL regular season for $2.7 million, making him a restricted free agent by the end of the 2013-2014 hockey year due to the first year being a slide.
The 21-year-old native of Carp, Ontario, Canada, is believed to be now out for an entire season at the very least due to the extensive damage on his shoulder and would require continuous monitoring to ensure a smooth and full recovery for the youngster.
It is not known right now whether New York will be paying De Haan his salary during the lockout as he has newly acquired an injury, but should be known in the days to come.
Selected 12th overall back in 2009, De Haan has just played one game in the major league and continues to perform in the minor league with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. There is no telling how the Islanders view him as a player, but the defenseman’s
performance in the AHL is certainly applaud worthy.
Last season, De Haan picked up 16 points (2 goals, 14 assists) in 56 games played with the Sound Tigers along with reaching the playoffs with them. After De Haan’s injury, the Sound Tigers did go on to win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, 3-2, on
Saturday. Immediately seeing the play, it was not clear how much of an impact the hit just might have had, but it surely did lead to his shoulder injury.
Shoulder injuries have been something Calvin de Haan has been continuously facing as this is said to be his third. Updates regarding his status should be expected in the upcoming weeks.
