New York Islanders’ Doug Weight hangs his skates after a 19-year career - NHL Updates
The New York Islanders has welcomed all reporters to cover a press conference called for one of their veteran players Doug Weight who is expected to announce his future in the National Hockey League, taking place this Thursday.
There are very strong reports leading to the fact that the player will most probably hang his skates and announce his retirement after spending 19 years in the National Hockey League.
Weight was a second round pick in 1990 by the New York Rangers but spent most of his NHL career with Edmonton Oilers and St. Louis Blues.
However, three years ago he signed with the Islanders and has been facing quite a few problems during his time with them. During the last two years, he has faced a number of injury issues in his shoulder and back and could only appear in 107 games in the
last three seasons.
The last two seasons with the Islanders has seen him playing only 54 games.
"I'm trying not to drag it out too long", he told during an interview last month. "I always told myself the last four or five years that I'm going to take some time after each season and re-evaluate. One thing's for sure, I love training, I love playing,
and when I am healthy I still feel like a good player. … In the next 2-3 weeks I'll probably figure that all out, when everything dies down, figure out what I want to do in talking to (Islanders GM) Garth (Snow) and talking to my family, make a decision".
Weight has been quite impressive during the course of his career where he has scored a total of 278 goals. He has scored these goals in 1238 games for six different teams, New York Rangers, Edmonton Oilers, St. Louis Blues, Carolina Hurricanes, Anaheim Ducks
and New York Islanders.
He won the Stanley Cup with Hurricanes, scoring 23 goals and 72 points out of 97 games he played.
