New York Islanders' rookie Travis Hamonic out for two weeks after surgery -NHL Update
It definitely was not a pretty site when New York Islanders’ rookie, Travis Hamonic, was hit with the puck in the face during a matchup against Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night, February 4, 2012, requiring surgery and stitches, forcing him out for at least two weeks announced the club on Sunday.
The puck came from a slap shot by Buffalo Sabres’ veteran defenseman, Christian Ehrhoff, during the contest, which unluckily landed on Hamonic’s face, forcing him to immediately leave the game and undergo medical treatment.
With the loss for a minimum of two weeks, New York Islanders could be facing a major blow to their team but asking players, they think that the team is already under intense pressure as they sit in the lowest depths of the Eastern Conference.
"To be honest, we were in trouble even before we lost Hammer," said Dylan Reese, who himself is a backup to another player, Milan Jurcina, since he is out due to a lacerated elbow. "But losing Hammer was definitely a blow."
Seeing another player out might not worsen the situation that New York is already in but it certainly is a blow to any plans of performing better in the second half of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season.
Hamonic, 21, was picked up as the 53rd overall pick during round-two of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft by the New York Islanders and is currently in his second season with his original draft team.
He entered the North American major league after spending multiple seasons in the Western Hockey League (WHL), mostly with the Moose Jaw Warriors and recently with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League (AHL) for 19 games last season.
In his first NHL year, Travis Hamonic played in 62 games and managed to pot 26 points (5 goals, 21 assists), a plus-minus rating of four and 103 minutes in penalty time.
The young defenseman is looking for a breakthrough season but now going out having played 51 games and a 12 point (1 goal, 11 assists) record, Hamonic might just not be able to achieve his goal this time around.
