New York Islanders burnout Calgary Flames by snapping four-game winning streak 3-1 -NHL Update
Just when it looked like Calgary was getting back in form to change their position around in the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season, the New York Islanders burned out the Flames by rallying to win, 3-1, on Thursday night, December 29,
2011, at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York, United States.
Calgary was on a four-game winning streak and were eyeing their fifth straight against what they thought would be a weak Islanders team, looking at their consecutive three losses, but New York was determined to bounce back as the rookies took over and earned
the two points.
The Islanders are still stuck in the 15th number spot of the Eastern Conference, which they will have to plan out a strategy for some time soon if they hope on getting anywhere this season.
"Our compete level wasn't at the level where it needs to be", said Calgary Flames coach, Brent Sutter.
Tim Jackman kicked off the scoring with his first of the season only 1:11 into the opening period as Tom Kostopoulos attempted at firing it through New York Islanders goalie, Evgeni Nabokov, but as the shot failed, Jackman was there to tip it in and give
the Flames an early lead.
The first period was relatively more physical as compared to the other two in which barely a penalty was awarded to any of the players.
Andrew MacDonald managed to level the game off a one-timer as P.A. Parenteau found him open at point blank range and fired of the quick slap shot past Miikka Kiprusoff to give them something to work on heading into the final 20 minutes of game play.
New York’s top rookie, John Tavares, found the wrap around opportunity to break the tie and take the lead for the Islanders with less than 17 minutes remaining in the third period followed by Brian Rolston with his fourth and insurance goal with less than
a minute remaining.
"It's not all about me. It's disappointing (to) not get two points (when) we're in a playoff race", said Calgary’s, Blake Comeau. "I wish nothing but the best for them".
Calgary Flames will be facing off against Ottawa Senators on Friday while New York Islanders host Edmonton Oilers on Saturday.
