New York Islanders defeat Detroit Red Wings 4-3
Centerman P.A. Parenteau scored the game-winner to lift the New York Islanders over the Western Conference-leading Detroit Red Wings 4-3, at Joe Louis Arena on Friday night.
John Tavares had a goal and two assists for the red-hot Islanders, who have knocked off the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Detroit Red Wings - the NHL's top two teams - in back-to-back games.
New York is 6-1-1 in its last eight games.
Matt Moulson and Jesse Joensuu also lit the lamp for Islanders, who saw three regulation goals come from offensive zone face off wins. Goaltender Dwayne Roloson surrendered three goals on
41 shots in the victory. Tomas Tatar scored the game-tying goal for Detroit, while Valtteri Filppula and Johan Franzen also scored in the defeat.
Jimmy Howard made 18 saves off 22 shots, as Detroit had their three-game win streak snapped. The Red Wings got on
the board first with eight minutes left in the opening period. Henrik Zetterberg gave a pass to Franzen, whose one-timer from the lower right circle trickled through goalie Roloson's pads. It was Franzen’s 17th goal of the season.
New York tied it up after Todd Bertuzzi went off for goalie interference in the 14th minute. Moulson swiped the rebound past goalie Howard, when Detroit defenceman Nicklas Lidstrom unexpectedly
knocked the puck into his own net. New York took a 2-1 lead with three seconds left in the first when Tavares backhander from the inside edge of the left circle got through the Detroit
goalkeepers pads.
With less than five minutes left in the middle session, Joensuu gave New York a 3-1 lead. Milan Jurcina hit a slap shot from the point and Joensuu tipped the puck past goaltender Howard for
his third goal of the season. Filppula cut the deficit in half and pulled the Red Wings to 3-2 with eight seconds left in the second period. He plucked a loose puck out of the air with
his gloves, placed it on the ice and chipped it in for his ninth goal.
Detroit tied the game at three with more than nine minutes left, when Tatar scored a tipped-in goal on a shot from Darren Helm. It was his first NHL goal in his first game. The
play stayed deadlocked the rest of the way to force the overtime.
In the fourth minute of overtime, Parenteau scored the game-winning goal and snatched the win. He ripped a one-timer from the left faceoff dot, when an annoyed Zetterberg was called for a
holding penalty after losing a wide open net. It was Parenteau’s ninth goal of the season.
