New York Islanders dismiss head coach Scott Gordon
If there’s one National Hockey League team that has been struggling greatly as of late, it’s been the New York Islanders. Since beginning their 2010-11 campaign with four wins, the Islanders
have found themselves in a massive slump, losing 10 games in a row.
The long string of losses did not sit well with the Isles’ upper management. As a result, tsn.ca has reported that head coach Scott Gordon has been officially relieved of his
duties behind the Islanders’ bench.
“We believe we need a change in direction and, with the majority of the regular season still ahead of us, our goal remains to qualify for the Stanley Cup playoffs,” Islanders general manager,
Garth Snow, said in a statement.
Gordon will not be leaving the team for good, though. Snow went on to mention that he will remain with the team in an advisory role.
“Scott has made tremendous strides with our team the past three seasons, and I look forward to continuing our relationship in an advisory capacity,” Snow said.
Replacing Gordon will be Jack Capuano, who currently serves as the head coach of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, the Isles’ American Hockey League affiliate. He will make his debut behind
the Islanders’ bench when the team faces the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday 17 November.
During his two-year tenure on Long Island, Gordon had a record of 64-94-23. The team missed the playoffs both times while under Gordon’s rule.
The Islanders have struggled in many areas in their first few games of the season, the most notable of which was their goal scoring output. They have scored an average of 1.7 goals per
game, which is the lowest among the 30 teams in the NHL.
In addition, their current record of 4-10-3 places them at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings.
