New York Islanders’ former player Pat LaFontaine asked to buy the team he played for
Pat LaFontaine, a former professional ice hockey player and one of the best players that National Hockey League (NHL) ever produced, has been in headlines as it is believed that he might be in to buy the team that he played for so many years, New York Islanders.
New York Islanders, who play in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference of the NHL, were the team that drafted the St. Louis, Missouri born former player and the team which gave him chance to make his name big.
Charles Wang, the Chinese who is the current owner of the NHL team looks to be selling the team as the lease of their current home stadium ends in 2014-2015 and it looks as if they are not going to play at that venue after that as long as the 68-year-old
Shanghai native is there.
According to The New York Post, they have learnt that some investors from Europe have persuaded LaFontaine to buy the team to keep it on the Island, where there are a lot of memories associated with the team. The Post said,
“Pat LaFontaine has been contacted by some European investors about the possibility of buying the money-losing team and keeping it on Long Island, The Post has learned”.
The New York Post also mentioned that some NHL sources have revealed that the Chinese owner is also thinking about selling the team, as they added,
“Islanders owner Charles Wang, who is seeking a new arena and has vowed not to play a single game at the aged Nassau Coliseum beyond the July 2015 end of his lease, has quietly let it be known that he is willing to sell the franchise if the price is right,
sources close to the NHL said”.
The 5-foot-10, 185 pounder centre served the team as a player in also a very positive and good way as he played 530 games for them, scored 287 goals and made 279 assists for a total of 566 points.
After playing 8 seasons for Islanders, LaFontaine moved to Buffalo Sabres, who e represented in 268 games, scored 158 goals, made 227 assists for a total of 385 points.
Last season of his career was spent at New York Rangers where he scored 23 goals and 39 assists for a total of 62 points in 67 games.
