New York Islanders get shutout by rowdy New Jersey Devils 1-0 –NHL Preseason Update
It was an intense matchup between New York Islanders and New Jersey Devils as both teams were dedicated to grabbing their second-last matchup of the 2011 National Hockey League (NHL) preseason. New Jersey emerged victorious, by shutting out the opponent,
1-0, on Friday, September 30, at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
New York Islanders lost their second straight matchup, both shutouts, the previous one bign a 2-0 loss against Calgary Flames. New Jersey on the other hand, finally snapped a three game losing streak to win their second game of the preseason.
"I wish (the regular season) started tonight", New Jersey’s, David Clarkson, said. "I think we're all anxious and confident in here, ready to go".
Micheal Haley was served a five-minute major penalty along with a 10 minute game misconduct for fighting with Matthew Corrente of New Jersey, who was also served a major.
Steve Staios of New York was booked for tripping, a little over midway through the first period, giving arch rivals, New Jersey an opportunity a chance at the power play.
Clarkson scored his first of the preseason during the added man advantage with Staios off the ice to put New Jersey ahead by one.
The second period was dry in regards of scoring but had the crowd on its feet as Matt Martin and Mark Fraser were served with major penalties for fighting right off the bat.
It was during the third and final period in which New York Islanders had a chance to make a recovery, but there was nothing from both sides except for the fighting. New York rookie player, Ryan Strome was given a five-minute major and 10-minute game misconduct
due to boarding Devils’ player, Stephen Gionta, further paralysing an already struggling line-up.
"The guy kind of turned into me. I don't know how bad it was. I didn't mean to hit him too hard", Strome said about possibly being suspended if NHL senior vice president for player safety, Brendan Shanahan, decides to review the hit. "I guess we'll see what
happens".
New Jersey Devils play their final preseason matchup against Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday, while New York Islanders will return home to face Boston Bruins the same day.
