New York Islanders re-sign veteran forward Jon Sim to one-year, two-way contract –NHL Update
The New York Islanders re-signed veteran forward, Jon Sim, to a one-year, two-way contract, on which the financial terms and conditions have not been disclosed, announced the team through a press release Wednesday night, August 2nd, 2011.
Islanders continued their domination of the National Hockey League (NHL) headlines, as all other teams remained silent with their daily affairs after everything that was needed to be done was finished and over with. New York still faces many problems, which
it must resolve sooner than later.
One of those problems, which could be ranked as one with grave consequences, is the lease that is expiring on their current stadium. One day earlier, on August 1st, the Eastern Conference franchise had their proposal to build a new, $400 million
stadium rejected by taxpayers who had the ultimate say.
Signing 33-year-old, Jon Sim to a contract was the second such signing of the day as Blake Comeau was signed earlier in an attempt to avoid a same-day scheduled salary arbitration hearing.
Sim’s two-way contract means that if he is not used or needed as much on the major league roster, he will be used for their affiliate club in the American Hockey League (AHL), Bridgeport Sound Tigers, who Sim has previously played 18 games with.
New York Islanders general manager, Garth Snow, made the announcement about re-signing Sim.
"Jon brings an unmatched work ethic and veteran leadership to our lineup and we're excited to have him back for the upcoming season", Islanders general manager Garth Snow said.
Drafted as the 70th overall pick during round-three of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft by Dallas Stars, Sim played four seasons with his original draft team before moving on to a rollercoaster of various clubs like Nashville Predators, Los Angeles Kings,
Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers, Florida Panthers, Atlanta Thrashers, before finally settling down with New York.
Last year Sim put up lower numbers than usual, four points (1 goal, 3 assists) in 34 regular season games, but his dedication for next season is a signal that it will be much better than thought of before.
