New York Islanders reveal plans for a new arena
Nassau County Executive, Edward P. Mangano, finally gave a big statement that the New York Islanders will finally be building a new arena.
The plan includes the creation of a superb arena that would boost the economy of the Islanders and create a lot of job opportunities.
"Today's a great day for Nassau County", Mangano told a crowd of supporters at the Coliseum. "This time, it's the real deal. The time is now".
After the initiation of the plan, Mangano and owner of the Islanders, Charles Wang, will be waiting to hear from voters. If the $400 million dollar project is approved then the construction of the new arena will start by 2012 and will be completed by 2015.
Then the arena would be leased to the Islanders that would give them no problems until 2045.
Wang has tried on several occasions to bring about a change for the Islanders by giving them new facilities and a better arena. Last time he spent quite a lot of money in a proposal that suggested that the current Nassau Coliseum should be made better.
However, the plan got rejected and this time he is hoping for some success as he finally tries to get approval after a decade of hard work.
"I think in life, it's what we do", said Wang, who has owned the team since 2000. "It was a leap to keep the Islanders on Long Island, and we did that. There is obviously risks involved in anything you do. We have to do something for Long Island -- not just
for the Islanders".
The owner of the Islanders expressed a lot of concerns, as to why he needed to make a new arena for the team. The most important thing for a player when he comes to a team is to look at the future and the owners said that after 2015 you don’t know what
would happen.
He said that once the team is assured of a future, big names would surely come into the team that would bring back the old days when the Islanders won back-to-back titles and wrote their names in the history books.
