New York Islanders win 4-3 against Montreal Canadiens after shootout
Another game, which couldn’t be decided in overtime, was the Montreal Canadiens playing host to the New York Islanders.
The game was played at the Centre Bell Arena with both teams looking for a win to give themselves chances of a play-off finish.
The game was very interesting and entertaining as the New York Islanders levelled scores three times after falling behind. The scores at the end of the regulation time were 3-3 and the game went into overtime.
During overtime, no goals were scored so the game went into a shootout. New York Islanders managed to score the only goal in the shootout and won the game 4-3 in the end.
Both teams started off slowly with Montreal Canadiens having an edge over the Islanders.
However, the Islanders managed to match the Canadiens on several occasions whether it was on offence or defence.
Montreal Canadiens, with the advantage of playing home, made a great start to the game.
There were several scoring chances for the both teams as they got stronger offensively with the passage of time.
Montreal Canadiens, with some brilliant pieces of play and strong offence successfully scored through Max Pacioretty, from a quick fired shot in the 15th minute.
New York Islanders didn’t take long to score and levelled the scores with a goal in the 17th minute scored by John Tavares from a brilliant shot. Tavares finally scored his first goal after scoring early in January against the Sabres where he
scored a hat-trick.
The period saw both teams making a few more goal attempts as the period neared its end, the goal keepers were able to deal with the pressure. There weren’t any more goals scored during the period with the scores level on 1-1.
During the first 20 minutes, New York Islanders made 12 goal attempts while Montreal Canadiens made 9 goal attempts.
The second saw the Montreal Canadiens stronger of the two teams when it comes to offence and defence. The home team with the attacking mentality successfully scored in the 6th minute through Benoit Pouliot from a well placed shot to get back into
the lead.
Montreal Canadiens fired shots after shots with New York Islanders making a few shots in between as well. The next goal took some time coming but was finally scored by Michael Grabner in the 18th minute from a well placed shot.
However, Montreal Canadiens took the lead once again scoring in the 19th minute through Tomas Plekanec from another decent strike in the game. The period ended with Montreal Canadiens leading 3-2. Montreal Canadiens made 20 goal attempts in the
period while New York Islanders made 10 goal attempts.
The final 20 minutes of the game were evenly matched by both sides as they fired shots on goal every now and then and maintained a decent defensive line. New York Islanders with the early pressure successfully levelled the scores in the 5th minute
scoring through Michael Grabner.
There were a few more goal attempts as the period neared its end but unfortunately they failed to score any further goals and the regulation time ended with the scores level on 3-3. The period saw both teams making 10 goal attempts each.
The game went into overtime where no goals were scored so a shootout was inevitable. Kyle Okposo of the Islanders scored through a superb shot, which hit the post on its way as they won the game 4-3.
