New York Islanders win 5-2 against the Buffalo Sabres
Buffalo Sabres hosted the first game of Friday at the HSBC Arena as they were up against the New York Islanders. This was the 708th game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series. The match was attended by around 19,000 fans with both teams looking
for a win as they are currently struggling.
However, it was New York Islanders who managed to come up with a decent performance as they won the match 5-2 in the end. Though Buffalo Sabres showed some late resistance but Islanders successfully scored to win the match. John Tavares was named the player
of the match for his splendid performance during the match and one assist.
Buffalo Sabres, playing home, made the better start of the two teams. Their passing and play making was flawless at the start of the match and with the quickness in their game, they didn’t give the New York Islanders time and space to settle and work.
However, it was just a matter of time before the New York Islanders were on top of their game. They kept possession and started to create chances. Resultantly, New York Islanders successfully scored through Michael Grabner from a brilliant strike in the
8th minute.
The away side kept on piling the pressure and more chances came in their way. After missing a couple of them, Islanders were able to double their lead in the 11th minute through Matt Moulson from a simple tip in shot.
There were a few more shots on goal by both teams but no goals were scored. The period ended with the Islanders leading 2-0 with each team making 10 goals in the period.
The second period saw both teams start off cautiously, waiting for chances to come their way. Though there were a few early chances but neither of the teams was able to convert them into goals.
New York Islanders caught the Buffalo Sabres on a counter and successfully scored their third goal through PA Parenteau in the 15th minute to take the score to 3-0. During the course of the second period, each team made 9 goal attempts but only
one goal was scored.
The final period started off with the Buffalo Sabres dominating the proceedings and displaying some excellent shooting and passing abilities. Buffalo Sabres had many scoring chances in the early stages of the match but they failed to capitalize.
It took some time but the first goal was finally scored by the New York Islanders in the 15th minute through Jack Hiller’s flick shot. Buffalo Sabres' hunt for a goal continued and the hard work they put in paid off as they scored two goals in
the 17th minute to trail by two.
Both the goals were scored by Nathan Gerbe with the later being scored through a brilliant backhand shot. However, New York Islanders sealed the match with their final goal in the 19th minute scored by Michael Grabner to win the match 5-2 for
the Islanders.
During the course of the final period Islanders made 10 goal attempts while the Sabres made 19 goal attempts.
