New York Islanders win 7-6 against the Buffalo Sabres after overtime
Buffalo Sabres playing host to the New York Islanders at the HSBC Arena was the second game of the Sunday. A capacity crowd was present to witness the game with both teams playing in the 837th game of the season. The game wasn’t expected to produce
so many goals.
But the weak defence coupled with strong offence resulted in the game turning out to be the most productive game of Sunday. The scores were level on 6-6 at the end of the regulation time and Islanders scored in overtime to win the game. Michael Grabner,
winger of the Islanders was named the star selection of the game for his three goals out of which one was the winning overtime goal.
New York Islanders made a brilliant start to the game. Their quick and pin point passing saw them getting into the lead within the first minute as they scored through Michael Grabner. The goal was scored as a result of a superb wrap around shot that left
the goal keeper with no chance of stopping it.
Both teams continued to construct plays and it was Buffalo Sabres who started to get strong offensively. The home team successfully levelled the scores with Jochet Hecht scoring in the 7th minute through a brilliant strike. Much to delight of
the home fans Sabres scored once again in the next minute to get into the lead. The goal was scored by Drew Stafford from a well placed flick shot.
It didn’t take long for the Islanders to come up with a goal too and they scored through John Tavares from a backhand shot in the 13th minute to level the scores once again. However, Buffalo Sabres struck the final blow as they scored in the 18th
minute to get back into the lead. The goal was scored by Drew Stafford from a brilliant tip in shot.
The period ended with the Sabres leading 3-2 at the end of the first period with Sabres making 11 goal attempts while the Islanders made 9 goal attempts.
The second period didn’t see many goals and goal attempts during the 20 minutes of play. During the period, both teams scored a goal each. The first goal was scored by Nathan Gerbe in the 5th minute to double the lead.
Chances were few and difficult in the period but Islanders finally managed to score to cut the lead to one goal scoring through Blake Comeau’s backhand shot in the 19th minute. The period ended with Sabres leading 4-3. During the period Islanders
made 7 goal attempts while Sabres made 4 goal attempts.
The final period of the game saw both teams shift gears as they came out very strong offensively. Islanders scored in the third minute to level the scores with the goal scored by Michael Grabner who bagged his second goal of the night. Sabres were able to
get back into the lead as Tyler Myers scored from decent strike.
Islanders scored two successive goals in the 12th and 13th minutes to get back into the lead. The first of these goals was scored by Milan Jurica from a powerful strike during power play. The second goal was scored during power play
by Ty Wishart. However, it was Buffalo Sabres who scored the final goal of the regulation time. The goal was scored by Drew Stafford as the period ended with the scores level on 6-6. The game went into overtime where Michael Grabner’s hat-trick goal won the
game of the Islanders 7-6 in the end.
