New York Islanders wins 6-2 against New York Rangers despite out of the playoff’s race

New York Islanders hosted New York Rangers this Thursday in what turned out to be a one sided game which Islanders won 6-2 at the Nassau Coliseum. The game was very important for Rangers who needed the win to stay in the playoffs as it was at the eighth
spot in the East with Hurricanes just three points behind. However, Islanders had nothing to lose as it is out of the playoff’s picture and was playing as spoilers.
The game saw both teams making a decent if not excellent start where they created a number of chances for themselves. However, they lacked finishing which resulted in no goals early on with the defence doing a good job.
Rangers scored the only goal late in the period to lead as the teams went into the break.
The second period was evenly matched between the two teams but it was Islanders with its strong offence scoring four goals to get into a comfortable position.
The final period saw Islanders scoring twice while Rangers scored once.
The game ended with Islanders winning 6-2 in the end with Al-Montoya, Islanders’ goalie, named the star for making 25 saves during the game.
There were a couple of shots on goals right from the start of the game but there were no goals in the beginning. Rangers with some strong plays managed to score in the 15th minute through Vinny Prospal’s well placed flick shot.
Both teams had some easy scoring chances but they were unable to capitalise and the period ended with Rangers leading by 1-0 at the end of the period. Islanders made 11 shots on goal while Rangers made nine shots on goal.
The second 20 minutes of play began with Islanders on fire on the offence and scored twice in the fourth minute to get into the lead. The goals were scored by Blake Comeau and Radek Martinek from two brilliant strikes.
The period moved on with both teams firing shots on goal that could have found the back of the net but it was Islanders who scored two more goals in quick succession to establish a healthy lead. The goals were scored by Jesse Joensuu and PA Parenteau in
the 14th and 15th minute, respectively.
The period came to an end with Islanders leading by 4-1. Islanders made11 shots on goal while Rangers made seven shots on goal.
The final period of the game saw both teams making 11 shots on goal but Islanders scored in the 9th minute through Matt Moulson’s tip-in shot. Islanders scored once again in the 14th minute through Trevor Gillies to further extend the
lead.
Rangers scored a goal in the final minute through Brandon Prust but it was Islanders who won the game by 6-2 in the end.
