New York Jets Braylon Edwards’ court date moved
New York Jets receiver Braylon Edwards’ court date for driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol has been moved from 11 January to 7 March, according to Edwards’ lawyer, Peter Frankel.
Frankel said that it was a routine process, and that the two sides are dealing with issues and working on resolutions. A judge accepted the request made by Edwards to move the hearing forward.
Edwards was stopped by police early on 21 September in New York for having exceptionally tinted windows on his Land Rover. After being stopped he was asked to take a breath test, which registers the blood alcohol content. Police who were there at the time
said that his blood alcohol level was .16; twice the legal limit in the state of New York.
Jets General Manager Mike Tannenbaum and Head Coach Rex Ryan left Edwards on the bench for the first quarter of the game against the Miami Dolphins, as a punishment for his DUI offence. Edwards later apologised to his fans and team-mates.
He is in his second year with the Jets, and had an essential catch in the last drive during their win over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. Edwards caught an 18-yard pass in Sunday’s American Football Conference (AFC) Wild Card game, which the Jets won
17-16.
When he was arrested on 21 September, Edwards was on probation for an incident outside of a nightclub in Cleveland, Ohio in October 2009. He was with the Cleveland Browns at the time and said that he was not guilty for aggravated disorderly conduct. A man
claimed that Edwards punched him, which led to him being put on probation for 18 months.
If Edwards is found guilty of driving while intoxicated, he will have to go back to Cleveland and see if he has violated his probation. If he has violated the terms of his probation, he will likely face a $1,000 fine and six months in prison.
He may also be punished by the league. If he is found guilty, it will be considered a violation of the NFL’s personal conduct policy which would result in a fine and suspension.
Edwards has a year left on his contract with the Jets, after which he will become a free agent. Their next playoff game is against the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium on Sunday, 16 January.
