New York Jets’ Brian Schottenheimer appears unmoved by mounting criticism – NFL News
When the New York Jets succumbed to a 29-14 loss to the New York Giants last Saturday, offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer was found taking much of the blame. So was the quarterback Mark Sanchez.
And it did not come as a surprise for two. The Jets offensive with an average of just 307.7 yards comes down as lowly ranked to the 27th number. Schottenheimer had been expected to improve the performance but it could
not materialize, thus drawing in waves of criticism from fans. The critics found ground in the internet, newspaper and websites to hit out on the coordinator. Many angry fans even came up with calls to fire him.
However, it seemed that Schottenheimer managed to escape all the heat as the coach Rex Ryan came out in his support. Ryan reiterated his support for the offensive coordinator saying he had “huge amount” of confidence in him. In
fact, Ryan said he had confidence in all of the coaches. So, Schottenheimer received the much needed support from Ryan.
Things though are not likely to cool down here. Another poor performance by the Jets and Ryan may be forced to part ways with him. The next clash is with the Miami Dolphins. It is a very critical game for the Jets as future prospectus
of reaching the playoffs are pinned with it. So this probably may be the last chance Schottenheimer has to prove himself even though his position seems strong enough to stand another collapse. However, this time the mounting criticism will likely take its
toll if Schottenheimer fails to deliver.
Schottenheimer, meanwhile though aware of his critics was not found worried about his post.
"You get texts from your friends, 'Hey, you doing OK? You don't have time to worry about it. It's out of my control. I'm an excellent football coach. Have we been inconsistent this year? Absolutely. I wish I could put my finger
on it and say exactly why that was." Schottenheimer said.
Maybe Schottenheimer derives confidence from the fact that it is his sixth year with the Jets and he has received a two-year extension with the team. Ryan has played cool on his coaches but with all his expectations pending on
the next game, it is unlikely Schottenheimer will able to withstand another failure. Ryan has talked a lot about winning the Super Bowl and has been making tall claims in recent weeks. So Ryan may come out hard the next time if he is proven wrong again A defeat
at the hands of Giants, whom Ryan had earlier on dubbed as the less better side already has him fumed up.
