New York Jets CB Darrelle Revis blames lack of fitness for lacklustre defence in 2011 – NFL News
New York Jets’ cornerback Darrelle Revis faced some tough time during the last season with his defensive team and thinks that poor preseason workouts and lack of conditioning were the reasons behind the defensive team’s failure.
Revis took the chance to talk to media after practice session on Wednesday, August 22, 2012. Talking about Jets’ defensive performance last season, he said:
"When you evaluate yourself, last year, yeah (it was a problem), If you look at the previous two years, the AFC Championship games, we were well conditioned, guys were very focused. I think we got away from that this past year and you could see it. You could
see it on film sometimes during the two-minute drill. In the fourth quarter, guys would be gassed."
Jets’ defence failed miserably in the fourth quarter of the season, hurting them badly. Although Jets finished fifth in the total defence, it was a downfall for head coach Rex Ryan. Under his guidance Jets’ defence had managed to finish first and second
in the 2009 and the 2010 season respectively.
Revis reiterated that he and his team are working hard to cover up the loopholes.
Coach Ryan will definitely have his eye on this matter. Being a defensive-minded coach, he has the reputation of creating an outstanding squad.
Jets need to take a closer look into such matters as their defence looks to spend more time on the field this season.
The reason for that is Jets’ struggling offence, which has failed to reach the end zone in the first two preseason games quite often.
If things continue like this in the regular season, Jets will have to brace themselves for another long season.
Ryan hopes that the defence will be ready to take the burden of having more playing time. He said:
"I think this can be a really good defense, and I mean a really good defense.”
