New York Jets DE Mike DeVito does not mind taking a pay cut, happy with Coples' signing - NFL News
Most National Football League (NFL) players would be furious with their team if they drafted in a new young player for the same position and the coach would later name the youngster a starter. They would be even more angered if they were asked to take a
pay cut in their contract.
However, New York Jets defensive end, Mike DeVito did not even break a sweat when all of the above happened to him.
The Jets used their 16th overall draft pick to sign a very talented young defensive end in Quinton Coples. Head coach, Rex Ryan was so impressed by the ability of the youngster that in a press conference he named him a starter before quickly rescinding
his statement.
DeVito whose playing time will be reduced after the arrival of Coples was also asked to take a pay cut in the final year of his contract which greatly slashed his base salary.
All these developments though have had no effect on the 27-year-old defensive end and in an interview with the
Associated Press on Wednesday he was happy that the team brought in Coples in the draft as he believes that the youngster will be a great addition to the defensive line.
"I'm glad to see that we got Quinton. I mean, the more talent we can add, the better. I want to be on a team that has guys that want to win and guys who can add to our defense, and he's one of those guys."
DeVito’s new deal though has many bonuses built into it which the defenseman will be able to recoup if he delivers on the field in the new season.
That is what DeVito is planning to do as he added further.
“As far as the future, I really feel that it's all about what you put out there on the field, so if I go out there and play well and do what I'm capable of doing, then I think everything will work itself out. That's the mindset I'm taking."
Competition usually brings out the best among players on a team and there will be no lack of motivation for DeVito to convince the coaches that he still deserves to remain the starter for the upcoming 2012-13 season.
