New York Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson fine after road accident - NFL News
New York Jets defensive end, Muhammad Wilkerson, was involved in a serious accident on Saturday, after his Dodge Challenger struck the back of a Toyota Siena and turned over.
The defensive end though suffered only minor injuries and was able to crawl out of his car on his own before being taken to hospital.
He suffered minor bruising which will not impact his training with the Jets.
According to The Star-Ledger newspaper, Wilkerson just received stitches to his forearm and was also given tickets for reckless driving in addition to a ticket for failing to maintain his lane after the incident which involve only financial penalties.
Chad Wiestling, the agent for Wilkerson said that his client was OK and the occupants of the Toyota Siena were also fine after the incident.
He said:
"First and foremost, other than the minor injuries, he's OK and everyone else involved is OK but I do not have a lot of details."
State Police have ruled out alcohol being the reason for the accident.
The team had been in contact with the player after the accident and a spokesman for the Jets said that Wilkerson’s minor injuries will not impact his ability to train with the Jets during training camp which begins on July 26th.
Wilkerson was one of the players touted by Jets head coach, Rex Ryan, to become a big presence in defence for the franchise in 2012-13.
Ryan had lavished praise on the player in a previous interview during mini-camp.
He said:
"He's going to be hard to ignore. That's for sure. The thing that you always look for in a young man, a rookie coming into the league, a lot of times he'll hit that wall and they'll do just the opposite. He actually got better as the season went on. He was
playing at a super-high level by the end of the season and he's actually gotten better."
Last year the 22-year-old made 49 tackles and had 3 sacks to his name.
He was also impressive during the team’s mini-camp and he would be a crucial cog for the Jets defence in the upcoming season as they target a return to the playoffs.
