New York Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson happy to be okay after horror car crash - NFL News
New York Jets defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson is lucky to be preparing for the Jets training camp instead of lying in a hospital bed.
In late June the 22-year-old defensive end was involved in a horrific car crash when he slammed his Dodge Charger into the back of a Toyota Siena during early morning hours.
The accident made his car overturn and the player was lucky not to have injured himself grievously and walked away with just stitches on his forearm.
Occupants of the Toyota Siena were also unhurt in the accident.
Wilkerson was not drunk during the incident and was charged with reckless driving and failing to maintain his lane by the Police.
Now the defensive end is preparing for the upcoming training camp sessions with his teammates and feels blessed to being unhurt in the crash.
Speaking to the Star-Ledger on Tuesday during a visit Linden High School where he worked with the children.
He said:
"With that situation, obviously I'm grateful that everyone is fine, nobody was hurt seriously.”
Adding further he said:
"It was a tragedy that it happened but I'm just happy everybody is okay and I'm blessed to be here.”
The defensive end felt happy to be working with the kids and said that such things happen in life and it is still difficult for him to discuss the accident.
"Things happen in life and I'm blessed to be here, blessed and happy that everyone else is safe and nobody was truly injured or hurt."
Joining the Jets in 2011 as a first round draft pick, Wilkerson made 49 tackles and was a crucial part of the Jets defensive unit taking part in all 16 games of the regular season.
This year his responsibilities will increase and the franchise can count themselves lucky that one of the stalwarts of their defensive line is ready for training camp.
The Jets ended up 8-8 last year after some poor performances and the team is looking to change things around this year while making another push for the playoffs in 2012.
Defence remains their strength and the franchise needs Wilkerson and the rest of the defensive roster to deliver their best performances in 2012.
