New York Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum: Quarterback Mark Sanchez to get 80-90 % of playing time – NFL News
After a long spell of speculations from the football pundits about how much game time starting quarterback Mark Sanchez will get during the season, New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum has finally given some numbers on this matter.
While attending ESPN’s ‘Mike on Mike’ on Friday, September 07, 2012, Tannenbaum said:
"Mark (Sanchez) is going to be on the field for the lion's share, In terms of, if that gives us the best match-up on that play, that's the play we're going to run. But again, Mark's going to be on the field for the lion's share. You guys will see. His playing
time will be 80-90 percent over the 16 games. He's clearly our quarterback.”
The Tebow-Sanchez debate has heated up again recently after comments made by Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes that Sanchez had become a bit rattled by the addition of Tebow.
Jets will start their season opener against Buffalo Bills on Sunday, September 09. Sanchez will be the starting quarterback, but the interesting thing to see will be how much playing time Tebow will get.
Both Sanchez and Tebow failed to give notable performance during the preseason as they failed to score even a single touchdown in any of the four games.
When Head coach Rex Ryan was asked about whether he would support the comments made by Tannenbaum, he tried to brush off the matter without giving any specific answer. Ryan said:
"I’m not real sure. I’m not sure yet. We are not going to put a percentage on it – at least I’m not going to."
Ryan’s response is quite legitimate indeed. The season has not yet started and there is still a long way to go. During this period, things can change as there could be injuries or lack of good performance from any one of the two players that can affect their
playing time, respectively.
Moreover, Tannenbaum does not have much control over the playing time any player gets. After the comments given by Ryan, one thing is certain that this quarterback debate will not dry out, no matter how the Jets offence performs.
