New York Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum believes there is no hurry to play Tim Tebow as starter – NFL News
After recent comments from New York Jets owner Woody Johnson indicated that a change of guard is likely to be made at quarterback, all the speculation has now been dusted down by Jets general manger Mike Tannenbaum.
Tannenbaum made the clarification that there is no insistence on Jets head coach Rex Ryan to play Tebow as starting quarterback. Talking to the Star-Ledger on Friday, October 05, 2012, Tannenbaum said:
"Rex, (owner) Woody (Johnson) and myself, we talk all the time. We have a great relationship and we have a good, robust debate about what's best for the team, but playing time is always going to be driven by Rex. We'll talk to (owner) Woody (Johnson) about
what we're going to do ... but Rex is in charge of who plays.”
Jets’ current starting quarterback Mark Sanchez has received severe criticism from the fans as well as media for failing to lead the offence from the front.
The offence was unable to score a single point in Week 4 game against San Francisco 49ers which they lost 0-34. Sanchez is currently having 49.2 % pass completion rating, while his quarterback rating is 69.6.
Although Sanchez has not been at his best, one cannot blame him for all the Jets’ offensive woes.
The quarterback does have the support of a capable running back. After the injury to wide receiver Santonio Holmes, the wide receiving corps is also very thin in talent and experience.
Tebow is pressing hard to get the starting position. However, with his lack of passing ability, Jets would think twice before making him starter. Talking about Tebow, Tannenbaum said:
"If we didn't want (Tebow), we wouldn't have traded for him. Rex, Woody and I felt good about that transaction. Tim hasn't had a lot of opportunities ... but we'll see how the next few games play out."
The next few games are indeed important for both players as well as management. Failing to win games could lead to long-term consequences including job security of Tannenbaum too.
In their next game, Jets will play Houston Texans, who are currently unbeaten this season.
