New York Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum confirms that QB Mark Sanchez will remain starter - NFL News
New York Jets capped a dramatic day on Wednesday as they announced the signing of quarterback Tim Tebow from the Denver Broncos.
The Jets who traded a fourth and sixth round draft pick in April’s draft to the Broncos brought the quarterback to the Big Apple and landed a seventh round draft pick in the process.
However, to avoid any controversy between Tebow and quarterback Mark Sanchez who signed a new three-year deal with the franchise earlier in the month, Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum told media that Sanchez will remain the starter for the Jets.
“Mark Sanchez is, has been and will be our starting quarterback. We’re adding Tim to be our backup quarterback and to play in other roles and packages.”
Tannenbaum though went on to praise Tebow and said that the Jets are excited to add the 24-year-old to the roster.
“He’s a competitor. He’s a winner. When you can add a player and a person like him, from our standpoint from working it over internally with our staff, with [owner Woody] Johnson, we felt there was a certain value we’d put on it. It was an unexpected opportunity
and, again as you guys know, when there are opportunities we’ll evaluate them thoroughly and to add a dynamic playmaker we’re really excited about it.”
Tebow was traded by Denver after they moved to sign free agent quarterback Peyton Manning. Manning’s arrival put the quarterback’s starting position at Denver in jeopardy and the Broncos were looking for teams to take Tebow off their pay-roll.
The Jets beat competition from Jacksonville Jaguars to bring the former Heisman Trophy winner to New York and hope that he performs in a similar fashion to his displays in Denver.
Tebow helped the Broncos lift the American Football Conference (AFC) West division championship and led them into the playoffs after a brilliant season.
The quarterback put together a string of late comebacks during his time in Denver and his biggest moment came in overtime during the wildcard playoff round encounter against Pittsburgh Steelers when Tebow sent an 80-yard touchdown pass on the first play
to Demaryius Thomas to help the Broncos win 29-23.
