New York Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum dodges questions on CB Darrelle Revis' contract - NFL News
Two years ago the New York Jets had to contend with a 35-day holdout by their best defensive player, cornerback, Darrelle Revis who missed most of the training camp due to an impasse over a new deal.
General manager, Mike Tannenbaum handled that situation well as he successfully negotiated a four-year deal with the cornerback worth $45 million and ended his holdout.
Revis would go on to help the 2010 Jets to the American Football Conference (AFC) Championship game although the franchise once again fell one step short of reaching the Super Bowl.
The contract at the time was seen as temporary with a new deal to be discussed at a later date.
However, Tannenbaum in a press conference told the assembled media that Revis deflected questions on Revis’ contract.
"Darrelle is under contract. Darrelle is obviously a really important part of our team, and we look forward to the 2012 season and hopefully accomplishing a lot of great things together."
When probed further by a reporter, Tannenbaum simply refused to answer any more questions on the contract.
"I said all I’m going to say about his contract."
The Jets are hoping that the 2012-13 season goes the exact opposite way in which their last campaign played out.
The franchise ended the regular season with a 8-8 record and missed out on the playoffs for the first time under coach, Rex Ryan’s tenure.
The team locker room was at the height of dysfunction as players turned on each other and especially quarterback, Mark Sanchez who came in for huge criticism by anonymous players who told the media that the quarterback was coddled and was lazy during practice.
Sanchez was also involved in a feud with wide receiver Santonio Holmes and the locker room problems completely overshadowed the team’s struggles on the field.
This year though the Jets are looking forward to reaching the playoffs once again.
Tannenbaum also shared his plans on draft day and said that the franchise remains open to trades.
"We’ll have 16 names we’re comfortable with. Could we slide up or back? We’re certainly going to be open to all scenarios. We’re happy at 16, that’s the cards we’ve been dealt, and we’ll maximize those opportunities."
The drafts take place on April 26th and it will be interesting to see the moves the Jets general manager makes as he is known to trade up in the draft.
