New York Jets OC Tony Sparano speaks to media in first press conference, praises QB's Tim Tebow and Mark Sanchez
The arrival of quarterback, Tim Tebow, at the New York Jets gave rise to a multitude of questions ranging from his role in the Jets’ offence and how the franchise will deal with a budding quarterback controversy between Tebow and starter, Mark Sanchez.
New Jets offensive coordinator, Tony Sparano gave his first press conference on Thursday with the media and said that both Tebow and Sanchez are brilliant players and he is happy to have both of them to work with in training camp and during the season.
Speaking to reporters he said that he was involved in the decision to bring Tebow to the franchise from the Jets and he is completely happy with the young quarterback’s arrival.
“I was involved in the conversation -- which I appreciate --with Mike (Tannenbaum) and Rex (Ryan). We sat down and had a conversation about it. That was really it. At the end of the day, it’s a decision that Mike and Rex made obviously for the better(ment)
of our football team. I was completely on board with it.”
Sparano who joined the Jets in January from the Miami Dolphins replaced former offensive coordinator, Brian Schottenheimer who left the franchise.
He added further during the press conference.
“It’s about trying to find good football players. Mark Sanchez is one h**l of a player. I am so excited to coach him. Tim Tebow is a good football player too. When you put both of these guys in a room and they’re playing checkers, they’re going to compete
at it.”
Coach Rex Ryan and general manager, Mike Tannenbaum have maintained throughout that Tebow will remain backup for the Jets and will lead a plan B offence for the team.
However, Ryan also said that the former Broncos quarterback could take as many as 20 snaps per game if need be.
All of this has led to great confusion on how the Jets will proceed on offence and it will be interesting to see their plans in action during both preseason games and during the 2012-13 regular season.
Last year the Jets ended with a poor 8-8 record and did not qualify for the playoffs something they are looking to change this season.
