New York Jets’ Owner Woody Johnson repeats support for Mark Sanchez – NFL News Update
New York Jets’ owner, Woody Johnson, has reiterated his support for team quarterback, Mark Sanchez, while speaking to the press.
Johnson repeated once again that he had a lot of confidence but sounded different when it came to viewing other options.
He commented that there could never be a 100 percent surety as to who would start as the quarterback next season, adding that the possibility of considering Peyton Manning if he were to be available could be explored.
Nevertheless, the owner still had Sanchez as his upfront man.
"We have a lot of confidence in Mark. We think he's our guy. He's got the work ethic and has all the ingredients in place to be a great quarterback", Johnson said.
Johnson repeated his point again that the hiring of new offensive coordinator, Tony Sparano, would help Sanchez in many ways.
Sparano, who took over within 12 hours after former offensive coordinator, Brian Schottenheimer, left stated that he could help Sanchez in many ways.
Though Sparano admitted that it had always been a difficult task to train Sanchez, yet he thought that the quarterback could be developed.
Sanchez has been taking in a lot of criticism lately for failing to come up to the expectations of the fans. Some have even called for him to be replaced with Peyton Manning.
The criticism reached a climax as some anonymous players took to a newspaper to sound their concerns regarding the quarterback.
One even went to the extent of calling him “lazy” and “content”.
However, the critics were silenced after New York Jets’ coach, Rex Ryan, Johnson and the general manager came to the quarterback’s rescue.
The owner appeared on giving Sanchez another chance by helping him overcome his problems, saying that he felt that Sanchez was a player who could learn and get better, adding that they would try making the offence more suitable to his development in the
team.
Johnson also noted that it was wrong to put the entire blame onto Sanchez for the team’s woes.
"He's got to have somebody breathing on his back, yeah, I think you could argue that", Johnson added.
However, a change in the owner’s stance from an earlier outright support to Sanchez to a bit changed outlook that could possibly view other options available on the table is in fact indicative.
This, he has already made evident by pointing out that it could never confirm that Sanchez would start as the quarterback the next season.
"I'm not going to ever tell you guys what we may or may not do", Johnson said as he spoke of taking the team to the top level. Johnson also added that he had full confidence that he could achieve this task and would be looking at every possibility available
in order to get the team to the top.
