New York Jets QB Greg McElroy believes starting for Jets is once-in-a-lifetime chance – NFL News
New York Jets quarterback Greg McElroy is ready to go through what he believes is the biggest day of his life when he gets his first start in a National Football League (NFL) regular season game against San Diego Chargers on Sunday, December 23, 2012.
According to the Jets’ website, McElroy revealed his excitement of getting the starting spot and said:
"This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. This is a great moment and a great milestone in my career. Obviously this is something I've looked forward to and I've dreamed about my entire life. I'm thrilled to have this opportunity."
McElroy was given the starting position by Jets head coach Rex Ryan on Tuesday, December, 17, after he finally benched quarterback Mark Sanchez who is at the lowest point of his career.
Sanchez has started 61 out of 62 games played since his addition in the Gang Green four seasons ago. McElroy pointed that Sanchez has played a big role in his development as a player. He also went on to say that backup quarterback Tim Tebow has been a great
inspiration for him.
McElroy only recently played his first professional game when he replaced Sanchez in the final quarter of Week 13 game against Arizona Cardinals.
The quarterback threw a pass for a touchdown in his first drive that proved to be game-winning.
After both Sanchez and Tebow have failed to take the Jets to the playoffs this season, there are rumours that Ryan is analysing McElroy for the starting quarterback position for the 2013 season.
However, McElroy is not focused on getting the starting spot permanently, rather the player is enjoying the moment. McElroy went on and said:
"I'm not concerned about next week against Buffalo, I'm not concerned about next year. I'm not concerned about those things. Just enjoy right now, live in the moment. That's what my dad said when I talked to him, 'Live in the moment. Enjoy this. You've been
dreaming about this your whole life.' I got here and I'm very grateful and excited about this opportunity.”
Jets drafted McElroy in the seventh round (208th overall pick) in the 2011 draft.
