New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez asks WR Santonio Holmes to be his valentine - NFL News
New York Jets quarterback, Mark Sanchez, for the first time since the season ended broke his silence even though it was only on Twitter as he asked receiver Santonio Holmes to become his valentine.
The two players had not seen eye-to-eye this season with many reports coming in from multiple sources that both Sanchez and Holmes barely spoken to each other.
Sanchez though has now extended a hand of friendship as he playfully tweeted Holmes to be his valentine late on Tuesday night.
"@santonio10 you want to be my Valentine? #fb"
The tweet was followed by a picture of a box of gift wrapped heart shaped cookies.
The latest extension of goodwill by Sanchez comes two weeks after head coach Rex Ryan told the media that both players are working on coming together and resolve their differences with contact already having been established by telephone.
"I think they're actually going to get together. Look, we were all disappointed at the way the season went. That's one thing we have in common. We also have a burning desire to win, to right the ship. The previous season, they had great chemistry. There's
enough common ground to bring them back."
The overtures will be necessary if the Jets want to return back in playoff contention.
Holmes had come under criticism from veteran players for his poor demeanour and constant criticism of the team’s offensive line leading to the standoff.
The wide receiver was blamed for walking out on the team in the final game of the season as the Jets lost 19-17 to Miami Dolphins that confirmed their exit from playoff contention.
Running back LaDainian Tomlinson was visibly angry after the game against Miami as he talked to reporters.
"It's tough for guys to follow a captain that kind of behaves in that manner. You've got to lead by example, and you've got to play your tail off until the last play."
New York needed a win and losses from three other teams to make it to the wildcard round.
Many fans called for releasing Holmes from the roster as he failed to make a catch in a game for the first time in his career but the Jets have decided to keep the 27-year-old on the roster guaranteeing him a payout of $ 15.25 million.
Hopefully both players can work out their differences for the next season.
