New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez desires to remain a part of Gang Green in future – NFL News
As the season has ended for the New York Jets who have failed to qualify for the playoffs, the players are starting to speak out about their future with the franchise.
On top of the list is quarterback Mark Sanchez, who wants to stay with the team despite putting up worse performance of his career in the 2012 season. Talking to the reporters after a 9-28 thrashing by Buffalo Bills in Week 17 on Sunday December 30, 2012,
Sanchez said:
"Of course, of course. I mean, this is where it all started, this is where we've had a bunch of fun playing a ton of games, almost 40 wins for Rex [Ryan] and I. We know we can be successful here, so hopefully things work out. If not, I just can't speculate.
We'll see."
Sanchez has thrown as many as 18 interceptions in the 2012 season including two against Bills in the season finale.
The quarterback is currently going through his three-year contract extension which he signed in March 2011.
Under the terms of the contract, Sanchez is to get a hefty $8.25 million in guaranteed money from Jets in 2013 no matter if he stays with the Gang Green or not.
Moreover, if Sanchez plays for the Jets in the 2013 season, he will cost the team a salary cap charge of $12.8 million, a lot less than what he will cost the team if they decide to release the player. Sanchez went on and said:
"I mean, I'm contracted here, I want to be here. That's all I've known is a Jets uniform. I plan on playing here forever, so who knows? . . . I know I'm better than this. That's what I'll focus on this offseason, getting better."
Sanchez got back his starting quarterback job in Week 17 after quarterback Greg McElroy failed to put up good performance in Week 16.
The quarterback has thrown a total of 52 turnovers in last two seasons which has been the biggest cause of his downfall.
Even though Sanchez looks incapable of keeping his job, his contract might force the Jets to retain him.
