New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez made too many mistakes according to Jets QB coach - NFL News
New York Jets quarterback, Mark Sanchez was severely criticised last year after the team ended the regular season with a poor 8-8 record and missed out on the playoffs for the first time since the quarterback’s arrival.
Sanchez performed below par during the last three games of the season as the Jets push for the playoffs ended on a sour note with players turning on each other.
This year though the quarterback is looking to amend his mistakes while regaining the form that took him and the franchise to two back-to-back American Football Conference (AFC) Championship games.
To help him meet that goal is the Jets quarterbacks coach, Matt Cavanaugh.
Speaking to the New York Daily News on Sunday, Cavanaugh talked about the problems Sanchez faced during the 2011-12 season.
"There were turnovers that were not his fault that were credited to him but there were enough that, playing that position, he needs to cut some of those down. Most of them came from just poor decision-making."
The coach said that he spent a lot of time talking with Sanchez about his mistakes and trying to help him minimise turnovers but the message did not hit home when things could have been turned around.
“Sometimes when you have quote-unquote the success that he had the first two years, maybe it doesn’t hit home. (Last) year, I think he became much more aware (that) it’s a fragile business.”
This year Sanchez will have even more pressure on his shoulders to perform as the Jets fans will not remain patient with the young quarterback.
The quarterback also faces competition from backup quarterback, Tim Tebow who joined the franchise after the Jets completed a trade with the Denver Broncos.
Cavanaugh though feels that Sanchez has the mentality and confidence to lead the team back to the playoffs and the coach is confident that the quarterback can lead the Jets to a Super Bowl if he cuts down on some of his poor decision making.
This is the year Sanchez has to prove that he can make the step up from being a good quarterback to become one of the elite.
It will be interesting to see how the Jets fare this season after last season’s catastrophic end.
