New York Jets QB Tim Tebow unsure of being starter - NFL News
When Tim Tebow joined the New York Jets in a surprising trade from the Denver Broncos many thought that he would soon replace Mark Sanchez as starting quarterback.
Tebow though on his part does not want to delve into a quarterback controversy so early in his Jets career and told the media on Friday that he is not sure if he will ever start again.
"You know what, I’m not sure. I don’t know what the future holds, but I know who holds my future. I can just worry about today and worry about becoming better as a football player, as a person."
The quarterback has been brought in as backup to Sanchez and both head coach Rex Ryan and general manager Mike Tannenbaum both have gone on record to say that Tebow will run a wild cat offence and will only be used as backup.
He also dodged questions on whether he thinks of himself as a starting quarterback for the Jets.
"My plan is to go in there and try to be the best quarterback I can be. More than anything, I think of myself as a competitor."
Tebow is no stranger to replacing already established quarterbacks.
The 24-year-old replaced Kyle Orton from the starting role at the Denver Broncos in the last season and went on to lead the team on an amazing winning run that secured the American Football Conference (AFC) West division title as well as a playoff berth.
Tebow led the Broncos to the divisional round after a brilliant 29-23 overtime victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the wildcard rounds.
Now with the Jets, the young quarterback is looking forward to working with his new teammates and coach and help the Jets to get back into the playoffs.
Tebow lavished praise on head coach, Rex Ryan, in the interview.
"I am truly honoured to play for a coach that is that passionate and loves the game that much. I really think he's a player's coach and you see guys want to go out there and play a little bit better for him.”
As the offseason comes closer and training camp begins it remains to be seen whether Tebow impresses his new bosses enough to start the 2012-13 season as the Jets first choice signal caller.
