New York Jets QB coach Matt Cavanaugh highly impressed with Tim Tebow - NFL News
Quarterback, Tim Tebow’s arrival at the New York Jets this offseason led many to question the decision to bring in the former Heisman Trophy winner but the young quarterback continues to win over fans and coaches alike with his work ethic and great personality.
The latest Jets coach to become a fan of Tebowmania is the franchise’s quarterbacks coach, Matt Cavanaugh who could not help but be impressed by what he saw from Tebow during training.
Speaking in an interview with the New York Daily News on Tuesday,
Cavanaugh said that he was pleasantly surprised by Tebow in training.
"I was pleasantly surprised when I saw him over an extended period of time ... not just watching him play on film. I think he's certainly got the arm strength. He has good mechanics. They're getting better every day."
The coach also added that Tebow is improving with his passing.
“I think with Tim, he’s more focused right now in the offseason on just working on the fundamentals of trying to be rhythmic in the pocket. . . And he’s shown great progress. I’m real pleased with him.”
Tebow’s arrival at the franchise led to questions about a developing quarterback controversy with Jets starter, Mark Sanchez.
Cavanaugh in an interview on Sunday with the same newspaper said that Sanchez made too many mistakes last season and now his praise of Tebow will be construed by many as the start of a new quarterback controversy at the Jets.
The Jets have maintained throughout that Tebow will be the backup but could take as many as 20 snaps per game as part of the wildcat offence.
Whichever way they use him in the upcoming season, the Jets seem very pleased by their signing.
It is now up to Sanchez to maintain his starting position at the Jets with his performances because with Tebow’s huge popularity among fans it will take only a few mistakes by the quarterback to get fans to turn on him and call for Tebow.
Till now though Sanchez remains the starter and the Jets will hope that after last season’s disaster the 2012-13 season can be its total opposite.
