New York Jets Rex Ryan more concerned about his team rather than his own future – NFL News
After all the fuss, New York Jets have finally ended their fight for a playoff spot after a 10-14 defeat in Week 15 against Tennessee Titans. However, Ryan insists that he is still focusing on the performance of the team rather than securing his future.
Ryan was available to the reporters on Tuesday, December 18, 2012, via conference call and reiterated his stance that all his focus is on improving the Jets output on the field. Ryan said:
"I've always said this, the priority is not me by any stretch, so I'm not thinking about myself. I'm thinking about this football team, and trying to get this team ready to play. And believe me, that's the truth. I think if you focus on the job at hand,
that I'll be better off that way than any other way."
After a good start to his coaching career with Jets, Ryan has now gone on to miss postseason twice in a row and analysts are saying that the coach is feeling the heat.
However, Ryan has still two years left in his contact. The team finished the 2011 season with an 8-8 record and they cannot put up a better record this time as they stand 6-8 with 2 games left. Giving his views about the team’s failure to get better this
season, Ryan said:
"Obviously as a football team we're 6-8, and nobody's happy about that. Ultimately, I'm the man accountable for this, and I understand that. Whatever decisions are made, and everything else, this is a bottom-line business, and right now we're 6-8."
Ryan insisted that despite losing big players through injuries this season, Jets only had themselves to blame as they had the chances to qualify for the playoffs.
The coach also pointed towards the tendency to give away turnovers to be the real cause of concern on the offensive side of the game.
Ryan’s indication towards turnovers might give an indirect reasoning behind benching quarterback Mark Sanchez in favour of third string quarterback Greg McElroy.
No matter what are the reasons behind the Jets despicable performance in the 2012 season, it has definitely led to clouds hanging over the future of Ryan with Jets.
