New York Jets’ Rex Ryan plans a simpler offensive system – NFL News Update
New York Jets’ coach, Rex Ryan, has recently revealed that one of the reasons for the team’s loss this season was the complicated offensive system being run by Brian Schottenheimer.
Ryan said that this was the reason why he was not involved in the offensive matters of the team last season.
"Quite honestly, the verbiage we had last season was probably a little much", Ryan said.
Brian Schottenheimer, who was the former offensive coordinator of the Jets, decided to leave the team and join the St. Louis Rams, recently.
The revelation comes as a surprise because Ryan has been working with Schottenheimer for three seasons and had been quite supportive of his coach who was receiving a lot of criticism.
Schottenheimer had been undergoing loads of criticism for having failed to improve the offence of the team, which was one of the main reasons why the Jets had been eliminated from the playoffs' race.
Angry fans wrote articles in the newspapers and on the internet against the poor show by Schottenheimer. There were even calls to fire him.
However, Ryan had then silenced the critics stating that he had a lot of confidence in Schottenheimer and all his coaches.
Schottenheimer’s failure had also included helping quarterback, Mark Sanchez getting back on track that resulted in Sanchez also becoming a victim to criticism.
One of the reasons for criticism was the frequent play-calling by Schottenheimer.
Under Schottenheimer, the Jets’ offence averaged just 307.7 yards per game and ended up being ranked at the 25th place in National Football League (NFL).
That performance was much below the one that the fans had been expecting of him. So, when Schottenheimer left, fans were happy to see him go.
Criticism and failure to reach the playoffs could be the reason why he decided to leave after having served the Jets for six years, though Ryan had been strongly supportive of him throughout the season.
“He’s got everything it takes to be a successful head coach in this league”, Ryan said after Schottenheimer left the team and thanked him for his work.
It obviously comes as a bit of surprise that Ryan is exhibiting a different tone for his former coach.
Ryan took just 12 hours to bring in the head coach of Miami Dolphins, Tony Sparano, as a replacement.
Ryan hoped that Sparano would help Sanchez overcome his shortcomings and said that one of the reasons why he hired Sparano was that he would run a simpler system.
"When we were in interview process, he'd show me the verbiage and I'm like, wow, I can visualize our football team in this type of system, I can see Mark being extremely effective playing the quarterback position", Ryan added.
The general manager of the team, Mike Tannenbaum, also hopes that Sanchez improves under Sparano.
