New York Jets’ Rex Ryan softens tone, plays cool in locker room environment – NFL News Update
New York Jets’ head coach, Rex Ryan, seems intent on softening his tone in the future as he admitted responsibility for having put pressure on his players with his big talk and Super Bowl guarantees.
Ryan had made tall claims all along the season saying they would win the Super Bowl this season but the team ended up being eliminated from the playoffs after an 8-8 ending.
However, Ryan defended himself, saying that all he had wanted to do was divert the pressure from his players and put it all on him but that failed.
Ryan stated he would learn from his mistakes.
“What I didn't anticipate was, I put added pressure on our players when I wanted to put the pressure on myself. That's something I obviously have to learn from", he added.
He had been making big boasts all along and had infuriated the New York Giants by claiming to be the better side while talking about owning the town.
This resulted in a cold war between the Jets and Giants, with a few players from both the sides taking strides at each other.
That culminated in Ryan receiving a rebuff though as the Jets went on to lose their next game 29-14 to the Giants.
Ryan, who had talked of being the better side for the next ten years and of not being a small brother to anyone, had to eat up his words.
Talking about his claims of winning the Super Bowl, Ryan stated that what else was there to achieve after a team has reached the championship games two times.
"It's Super Bowl or bust. Well, we busted", Rex Ryan admitted.
He also played cool on the tension in the locker room saying that LaDainian Tomlinson may have overstated the amount of tension that existed.
Ryan termed the rift between the quarterback, Mark Sanchez and Santonio Holmes to be an isolated one and felt that it was not “pervasive” throughout the locker room.
He also added that not everyone in the locker room was involved but admitted that the incident did have a “negative impact” on the team.
Rex Ryan wants to be more involved in the affairs of the team apart from just being present on the field.
He earlier admitted that he did not have control of the locker room, saying that he had lost “pulse” of the team.
"I want to be a great head coach", he said. "I want to be. Am I there yet? No, I'm absolutely not there yet, but I am willing to work to get there".
Finally, the coach who has been quite adamant with his boasts and claims this season's plans of taking a more realistic approach, adopting a softer tone.
