New York Jets’ Rex Ryan to spend more time with defence – NFL News Update
New York Jets’ Head Coach, Rex Ryan now plans to spend more time on the defensive front as he gears up to prepare his team to win the Super Bowl the next year.
The Jets defence has ranked at the 5th number in the National Football League (NFL) this year conceding just 312.1 yards per game.
Talking to the Star-Ledger, Ryan said he would get more involved in the affairs of the defence.
"I know I can make an impact on defence, I always have my whole life, and I think I'll even get more involved," Ryan said.
Ryan had earlier stated his desire to be more involved in the day-to-day affairs of the team after the Jets were eliminated from the playoffs this season after a season’s finale loss to the Miami Dolphins.
News of a rift among the players had emerged towards the end of the season prompting Ryan to admit that he had lost the “pulse” of the team, saying he had to be more involved in the affairs of the team rather than just remaining on the field.
Now Ryan would be calling the shots and focusing more on the defence, though Ryan would be sharing it with his defensive coordinator, Mike Pettine.
Pettine has remained the Jets' defensive coordinator for three seasons and Ryan plans to share the shots with him, although he wants to wait and see how the situation develops.
"We'll see how that goes. We'll share like we have done in the past. I think that will be what we do. We have always gotten input, whether I am making the final call or Mike Pettine is making the call." Ryan said.
This does not suggest that Ryan does not have confidence in Pettine. It is just that Ryan wants to be more around the defence and hold more meetings. Ryan said that Mike was “terrific” but he wanted to be more “in touch’ with the players
Ryan has already stated that he would also be more involved in the offense of the team after former offensive coordinator, Brian Schottenheimer left the team and Tony Sparano was brought in as a replacement. Ryan had then said that Brian was running a complex
offensive system and he now intends to run a simpler offensive system.
Faced with a deteriorating situation in the Jets’ locker room, Ryan is now focusing on being with the team more often and getting more involved in the offensive and defensive matters of team.
Ryan had earlier claimed of winning the Super Bowl this year but following elimination from the playoffs wants his team to win the Super Bowl the next year.
