New York Jets Sal Alosi intentionally trips Miami Dolphins Nolan Carroll
During the New York Jets loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, New York’s strength and conditioning coach Sal Alosi tripped Dolphins cornerback Nolan Carroll.
The rookie fell to the ground after running out of bounds on a punt return with Alosi later admitting that he purposefully interfered with Carroll.
He stated, "I made a mistake that showed a total lapse in judgment. My conduct was inexcusable and unsportsmanlike and does not reflect what this organization stands for. I spoke to Coach [Tony] Sparano and Nolan Carroll to apologize before they took off. I have also apologized to Woody [Johnson], Mike [Tannenbaum] and Rex [Ryan]. I accept responsibility for my actions as well as any punishment that follows".
Carroll says that he is not upset or angry about being tripped, but his teammates were a bit more agitated. Dolphins inside linebacker Channing Crowder said, "They're cheaters. They do what they do. They cheat. They talk junk. But we beat the h**l out of them today”.
Miami runner back, Ricky Williams added, "It's the Jets right? We're not surprised".
Greg Aiello, an NFL spokesman, said in an email that the League will review incidents like these throughout the week. Rex Ryan, coach for the Jets, said that he was informed about the tripping when he stepped on the podium to answer questions and make a statement. He did not answer any questions about the incident until he saw replays as to what had happened.
Jets public relations chief, Bruce Speight articulated, "The team is reviewing the situation and is looking into the appropriate next steps".
Tony Sparano, head coach for Miami, said that he would submit videos of the play to the League for a review. "There was a player down on the sideline, and that's not good," Sparano said. "We're trying to take care of players in this game".
Alosi joined the Jets in 2001, followed by one season with the Atlanta Falcons and then back to the Jets. He was a linebacker at Hofstra University. Replays showed that Alosi stuck his knee out and leaned towards the field to trip Carroll. Carroll was attended to by medical staff and had to ride a stationary bike at the sidelines before coming back into the game.
Dolphins defensive end, Kendall Langford alleged, "That was bad. Unfortunately, he had to do that, and he really could have hurt Nolan. He could have ended his career with that. I think maybe somebody needs to do something about that as far as the league goes. I think he should get fined. We get fined for illegal stuff. Why can't the coaches"?
