New York Jets: What went wrong against New England Patriots in Week 12 – NFL Special
It seems that New York Jets’ season could not have gone much worse, as New England Patriots got a season sweep against them with a 49-19 victory in Week 12 game on Thursday, November 22, 2012.
The loss means Jets are now 4-7 and this defeat is likely to have put the final nail in the coffin, unless Jets win all of their remaining five games of the regular season to have a chance of qualifying for the playoffs.
Despite having a good start to the game, things went awfully wrong as the Jets gave away lots of turnovers while the defence failed to keep control.
In order to find what exactly went has gone wrong with Jets season in general and with their performance during Week 12 in particular, we must analyse all the major events that occurred during the game.
Jets were going very well in the first quarter as the defence kept Tom Brady and company quiet. However, the offence missed many opportunities during that period to take the lead.
With the first quarter done and dusted, the Gang Green came loosened up in the second quarter and went through string of fumbles by the offence and bad performance by the defensive line that led to the team giving away three touchdowns in the span of 52
seconds.
It seemed all over for Jets at that point. As it has been the case for Jets throughout the season they were stuck in a position where there was no way to recover.
Jets went into the second half chasing a 32-point lead and went on to lose the game by the difference of 30 points.
The defence gave away 475 yards which was the pinnacle of their undoing. Meanwhile, the offence and the special team gave a combined five turnovers, most of them were returned for scores.
Whenever quarterback Mark Sanchez has failed to perform, Jets have struggled to win. As we look into the performance given by Sanchez during the victories and defeats, there seems to be a stark contrast.
Sanchez has put up 60% pass completion during four wins while he completed 53.3% of the passes during seven defeats.
The same has been the case with the rest of the offence as it has averaged 33.25 points per game in victories as compared to 12.5 points in defeats.
The defence has also posted similar kind of performances as they have given away 17.5 points per game in wins, while a massive 31.4 points per game in defeats.
This game was the perfect example of how things have gone out of hands for the Jets this season. Jets head coach Rex Ryan needs to come with a solution out of oblivion to save his job as well as respect. Giving his views after the game, Ryan said:
“You just have to pick yourself up. I don’t know any other way to do it. That’s what you have to do. You have to pick yourself up from that and find a way and keep fighting. And that’s just through hard work and determination and belief and that’s what you
have to do. And when I talked about it last night about we’re wounded and we’re about as badly wounded as you can be, but we’re not dead. We are going to keep fighting and that’s what we do.”
Even though these words are soothing, it does not solve the issues the Jets’ current issues, which range from starting quarterback debate to discipline problems.
