New York Jets agree to four year deal with rookie DE Quinton Coples - NFL News
New York Jets picked defensive end, Quinton Coples as their first round pick in this year’s drafts.
The franchise used their 16th overall pick to bring the talented pass rusher to New York and on Thursday, Coples signed his first National Football League (NFL) contract which will keep him at the franchise for four years with the option to extend
it for another year.
New York Daily News first reported that the Jets had reached the deal with the franchise confirming the signing of Coples.
According to ESPN.com, the defensive end is set to earn approximately $ 9 million during his first four years at the Jets and will take over starting duties in the team in 2012.
Coples was at one time expected to be a top five draft pick after some brilliant performances for North Carolina. However, his senior season was marred by some poor performances which caused his stock to drop among scouts with many calling his dedication
to football into question.
The Jets though were heavily impressed with the youngster who was watched on his pro-day by head coach, Rex Ryan himself.
He was used in a variety of positions during the rookie minicamp with coaches being impressed enough to name him a starter in the new season. He will replace Mike DeVito in defence.
In an earlier interview Coples said.
"(I want to show) that I can compete at the highest level, that I can compete on the national stage, that I can help the New York Jets get to a Super Bowl,"
His real talent will only be seen when he puts on the Jets colours in a NFL game but from his current performances in training the Jets are expecting big things from the young player.
Rex Ryan said about Coples.
"He's got all of it. He's got range. He's got length. He uses his hands on a pass-rush. He can flip his hips, do all that type of stuff. ... I really feel there might be more to give. I think he might even have upside, so I thought that was a terrific pick."
Let’s hope that Coples delivers some big performances for the Jets in the upcoming season.
