New York Jets and their shattered hopes of glory – NFL Season review (Part I)
The two National Football League (NFL) teams from the city of New York, Jets and Giants, had a totally different last NFL season as one went on to win the Super Bowl, while the other could not even qualify for the playoffs.
Despite making tall claims throughout the season, Jets failed to live up to the standards their talks had set earlier. The final nail in the coffin proved to be the slump towards the end of the regular season that dented their chances to reach the second
round from the American Football Conference (AFC) East division.
Jets struggled a bit at the quarterback position and the management even explored some options to bring in a new face following the end of the season.
Jets eventually managed to acquire the sensational Tim Tebow from the Denver Broncos and are expected to come with a much improved line-up in the next season.
In this space, we are going to have a look at Jets’ performance in the last season and analyse all the 16 games they played. Let’s start with the season opener.
Against Dallas Cowboys
The Jets started their season as they hosted the ‘America’s Team’, Dallas Cowboys.
Much to the delight of coach, Rex Ryan, Jets won the game in a convincing manner after staging a commendable comeback in the final quarter.
Cowboys scored a touchdown in the first quarter and added a field goal in the next to increase the lead.
Jets got their first scoring move in the second quarter by scoring a touchdown, but they were still three points behind when the halftime was called.
Cowboys added another touchdown in the third period to increase the lead, and Jets could again manage just a field goal.
Cowboys scored a touchdown in the final period to take the score to 24-10. However, Jets stunned the Cowboys in the next 15 minutes as they scored two touchdowns and a 50-yard field goal to win the game 27-24.
Ryan said after the game:
"We just kept hanging in there and hanging in there, believing we can get it done. I can't be more proud of our team. Obviously, we have a lot of work to do, but we'll take this kind of victory any day of the week."
Against Jacksonville Jaguars
After defeating the Cowboys, Jets hosted Jacksonville Jaguars in the next game and successfully carried the winning momentum into the game.
Jets got a good start to the game as they first scored a touchdown in the first quarter and then tackled one of the opponent’s defenseman in his own end zone to get two more points. Jaguars also managed a field goal in the quarter.
Jets got two field goals in the second quarter and added two touchdowns in the third while preventing Jaguars from scoring any point.
In the final period, Jets scored another field goal and won the game, 32-3.
The coach said after the game:
"There was one streak we wanted to break and that's it, the first-quarter struggling offensively. That's really a team deal and a team start. It was great to see them respond. When we tighten things up, not making communications mistakes, we're tough to
beat."
