New York Jets and their shattered hopes of glory – NFL Season review (Part II)
Continued from part I...
At Oakland
Jets got a good start to the season and they were pretty excited about it as well. However, when they took the first road trip of the season, the result was not what they had anticipated.
After winning the first two home games, Jets played their next game against Oakland Raiders on the latter’s home field.
Jets started reasonably well and after going down early, they scored a touchdown to level the score in the first quarter.
They increased the lead in the second quarter as quarterback, Mark Sanchez, sent an 18-yard touchdown pass to LaDainian Tomlinson. The scoring move was followed by a 21-yard field goal from Nick Folk.
However, Jets gave away the lead and allowed Raiders to rally in the final five minutes of the quarters.
At halftime, both teams were tied, 17-17.
In the third quarter, Raiders got a touchdown and took the lead. They increased the lead after scoring another touchdown in the final quarter.
Jets attempted to hit back and could not score more than a touchdown after which Raiders got a field goal.
Jets got their first defeat of the season as the final score settled at 34-24.
At Baltimore
Jets played their next game against Baltimore Ravens. It was their second road game of the season and the result was once again tormenting for them.
It was the first time that Jets struggled throughout the game as they were dominated right from the start and were never able to get hold of the game.
Ravens started with scoring a touchdown, which was replied by a touchdown from the Jets, but the former added a field goal and another touchdown in the same quarter and Jets did not have any reply to that.
Ravens were already leading by 10 points when the second quarter started. They scored a field goal and a touchdown to increase the lead to 20 points.
However, Jets reduced the deficit to 10 points again after scoring a field goal and a touchdown.
Ravens added a touchdown in the third quarter and the rest of the game went goalless. The final score settled at 34-17 in favour of Ravens.
Jets’ quarterback, Mark Sanchez, was unable to deal with Ravens’ defence and he ended up completing on 11 of his 35 attempted passes for 119 yards. He could not send any touchdown pass, but could not avoid throwing an interception.
At New England
Two victories in a row were followed by two straight defeats and Jets were in some trouble as they were not able to win road games and they were to play another game on road.
This time the opponents were the New England Patriots, who would go on to compete in the Super Bowl XLVI final against the New York Giants.
The Pats took the lead in the first quarter in which they scored a touchdown without allowing any scoring move from the Jets.
Patriots added a field goal in the second quarter to take their score to 10 points. However, Jets also got a touchdown in the quarter to reduce the deficit to only three points.
In the third quarter, Patriots scored two touchdowns while Jets could only get one. Patriots got two field goals in the final quarter while Jets could only get one touchdown and lost the game.
The final score settled at 30-21.
Sanchez was brilliant as he completed 16 of his 26 attempted passes for 166 yards while having two touchdowns, but he could not prevent the defeat. He said after the game:
"I never thought we'd have a three-game losing streak like this. It's just frustrating."
