New York Jets and their shattered hopes of glory – NFL Season review (Part IV)
Continued from part III...
After completing the first half of the season, Jets were in a relatively better position and had a strong chance of reaching the playoffs.
However, the second half was not as productive as the first and Jets had to pay the price of their own flaws.
Against New England Patriots
Jets had not lost any game on their home field and it was the perfect opportunity for them to avenge the earlier loss against the New England Patriots, who were visiting New York this time.
However, the Pats were not the ones who could be easily overcome. New England became the first team to defeat Jets on their home field in the season.
Patriots were aggressive from the start as they scored two field goals in the first quarter without conceding any point.
Jets sacked Patriots’ quarterback, Tom Brady, in his own end zone in the second quarter to get two points, which were followed by a touchdown from the Jets.
Patriots, however, managed to score a touchdown at the end of the quarter to take the lead.
In the third quarter, Patriots added a field goal and a touchdown while preventing Jets from scoring any point.
Jets got a touchdown in the final quarter, but Patriots also got 14 points as they sealed the victory.
The final score settled at 37-16.
At Denver
Things were still not out of the hands and Jets were still in the playoff contention. However, their trip to Denver Broncos dented their qualifying chances for the postseason.
Both teams were strong on defence, but Broncos eventually managed to emerge victorious after changing their quarterback during the game.
Jets’ quarterback, Mark Sanchez, struggled slightly with accuracy and ended up completing 24 of his 40 attempted passes for 252 yards. He also threw one interception.
In the first quarter, Broncos scored a field goal and Jets replied by registering the same scoring move in the second quarter.
In the third quarter, both teams scored a touchdown each and the score stayed tied at 10-10.
Jets got a field goal in the final quarter, but Broncos replied by scoring a touchdown and won the game, 17-13.
Against Buffalo Bills
After facing two defeats in a row, Jets were in a difficult situation and badly needed a victory to stay alive in the competition.
A game on their home field against Buffalo Bills provided Jets the much-needed winning momentum.
Jets had earlier defeated Bills and they were confident of doing it again. This time, however, Bills put a much stronger competition.
Bills scored a touchdown in the first quarter to take the lead and successfully defended.
Jets finally got a chance to register a scoring move in the second quarter in which they got two touchdowns. Bills also got a touchdown in the quarter and the halftime score settled at 14-14.
Bills and Jets scored a touchdown each in the third quarter and the score was once again tied 21-21.
In the final quarter, Jets scored a touchdown, but Bills could only get a field goal and lost the game, 28-24.
Sanchez completed 17 of his 35 attempted passes for 180 yards while throwing four touchdowns and one interception.
Rex Ryan said of his quarterback:
"He's at his best in big moments."
After 11 games, Jets were 6-5.
