New York Jets and their shattered hopes of glory – NFL Season review (Part V)
Continued from part IV...
Jets had five more games left in the regular season and their chances of reaching the playoffs were still open. They had finally gained confidence of facing the opponents on the latter’s home field and were ready from another trip.
At Washington
The Washington Redskins were not having an idea season and Jets could capitalise on the opportunity to improve their record.
Rex Ryan had a plan in mind as he knew that his team had to win games to qualify for the postseason.
Redskins and Jets gave a tough time to each other and it was difficult to predict the winner for at least the third quarter after which both teams were tied.
Jets and Redskins started the proceedings by scoring a touchdown each in the first quarter. Redskins went past the Jets in the second quarter as the former scored two field goals while allowing the latter to score only one.
In the third period, however, Jets managed a field goal to level the score 13-13.
Redskins got two more field goals in the final quarter, but this time Jets had a much better answer as they scored three touchdowns to win the game, 34-19.
Against Kansas City Chiefs
After once again winning two games in a row, Jets hosted the defensive Kansas City Chiefs and got their third straight win.
Mark Sanchez was in top form as he completed 13 of his 21 attempted passes for 181 yards and sent two touchdown-passes, receiving a passer rating of 121.3.
Jets scored a touchdown in the first quarter in which Chiefs managed a field goal. However, Jets got a strong lead in the second period in which they scored three touchdowns.
In the third quarter, Sanchez shined once again and scored another touchdown. This time, however, he rushed for three yards to get the scoring move.
Chiefs managed a touchdown in the final quarter, but they also knew that it was too little too late as they were still trailing by 25 points.
Jets got two safety points in the final period and won the game, 37-10.
Sanchez said after the game:
"I was happy we had another opening-drive touchdown. It set the tone early, and we converted on some big third downs and didn't get too many third downs, which was good. We had some explosive plays and the run game really took off."
Coach Rex Ryan was also pleased with the way the game started for Jets and said that he loved it.
At Philadelphia
The Jets had three games left in the regular season and they did not know what was awaiting them.
The resurging Philadelphia Eagles were scheduled to play Jets in the next game and the latter were totally crushed by the Eagles.
Eagles started with scoring two touchdowns in the first quarter without allowing Jets to score any point.
In the second quarter, Eagles added two more touchdowns before Jets could get their first scoring move of the game.
Jets were trailing by 28 points when they scored their first field goal, which was followed by a touchdown and another field goal.
The halftime score, 28-13, still settled in favour of Eagles.
Eagles added 10 more points in the third quarter while both teams scored a touchdown each in the final as Eagles won the game, 45-19.
Sanchez said after the game:
"It's embarrassing. It's not good football. We just didn't play our best speaking from an offense perspective, and it puts our defence in a hole. We are a much better football team than we showed."
