New York Jets beat Cincinnati Bengals Part II
The first half of the Thanksgiving game between the New York Jets and the Cincinnati Bengals turned out to be somewhat uneventful. The first quarter ended without any points being scored and in the second the Jets scored a field goal while the Bengals took
the lead with a touchdown.
In the end of the second quarter the Jets attempted a field goal to but their attempt was no good. New York would turn around their slow first half as soon as the third quarter opened. The Jets returned a 57 yard kick for 18 yard to start at the 31 yard
line.
New York’s quarterback Mark Sanchez threw a 16 yard pass to wide receiver Santonio Holmes in the first play of the 3rd quarter. ‘Mr. Everything,’ Brad Smith took the drive home with a spectacular 53 yards run for touchdown.
Smith ran left with the ball and through Cincinnati’s defensive line. Defensive back Brandon Ghee was the only one to get his hands on Smith but Smith slipped through and scored the first touchdown of the game for New York. With the extra point, the Jets
took the lead and didn’t let it go until the end.
The Bengals got a good opportunity to score 5 minutes into the third quarter. On the 36 yard line the Bengals covered all of New York’s receivers. Sanchez looked for an open receiver as the Bengals converged in on him. He tried to buy time, a full 9 seconds,
and avoided getting sacked by the Bengals but he couldn’t hold them off forever.
Sanchez just wanted to let go of the ball. He passed in the general direction of Shonn Greene but that might have been just a coincident. Sanchez had no idea where he was throwing and ended up throwing an easy interception to Rey Maualuga. He carried the
ball 11 yards before Greene brought him down on the Jets 37 yard line.
Cincinnati couldn’t make use of the first turnover of the game. In the first play Palmer handed over the ball to Chad Ochocinco. There was no way for Chad to make his way through the Jets defensive line so instead he threw a deep pass to Terrell Owens. The
pass almost became a touchdown. Owens went all the way into the end zone and the pass was on target.
However the ball just barely slipped through Owens’ hands. A 15 yard penalty on the Jets pushed the Bengals into the red zone.
The Bengals just had to advance 15 yards but the Jets defence wouldn’t allow it. In the end the Bengals would have to attempt the field goal. Aaron Pettrey was just 27 yards away but still the field goal attempt was no good.
The Jets caught a break in their next drive. The Jets were forced to punt the ball on their 25 yard line but the catch was muffed. The ball fell between Quan Cosby and Andre Caldwell but neither men went after the ball.
Cosby, instead of trying to get the ball, chose to block running back Joe McKnight. Caldwell too casually looked on as New York’s James Ihedigbo pounced on the ball. New York got a fresh set of downs on Cincinnati’s 14 yard line.
Sanchez finished off the drive with a short right pass to Santonio Holmes. Holmes ran down and sharply turned left inside the end zone to receive the pass and score the touchdown. With the extra point the Jets led 17 against 7.
Into the fourth quarter Brad Smith stole the show. After a Cincinnati field goal, Smith returned Pettrey’s kick for an 89 yard touchdown with just one show on.
Smith caught the ball on the 10 yard line and rushed right into the traffic. He was quick and agile jumping left and right to evade the Bengals. Though he lost his shoe in the run, he didn’t lose the ball till the end zone. The extra point was good. New
York scored a safety before the end of the quarter. Defensive end Trevor Pryce sacked palmer six yards behind the end zone to bring New York’s score to 26.
The Jets ended the quarter with possession of the ball. Mark Sanchez Kneeled 3 times to run the clock down and in the end Jets won 26 against 10.
