New York Jets beat Cleveland Browns in OT thriller
The Cleveland Browns put in a commendable effort against a team that is leading the NFL, the New York Jets. The Browns put pressure on the Jets early on in the game. Colt McCoy led the Browns on the very first drive into the endzone, but the Jets defence
didn’t let Cleveland cross the 17 yard line. The Browns still walked away with a field goal.
The Jets answered with a field goal on their own in the next drive with Mark Sanchez at the Helm. The Browns fumbled the ball when they regained possession but the Jets couldn’t make anything of the turnover as Nick Folk’s field goal attempt went wide.
Before the quarter ended the Browns successful rallied into the Jets’ endzone and running back Peyton Hillis pushed 12 yards through the Jets defence for the touchdown. Sanchez opened the second quarter with a 76 yard drive that ended with a 25 yard touchdown
pass to wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery to tie the score once again. McCoy could only muster a field goal after the Jets’ touchdown but was able to put the Browns in the lead again, which lasted only 5 minutes though. Sanchez took back the lead in the final
seconds of the second quarter with a touchdown.
Almost the entire third quarter was taken up by a single drive by New York. The Jets started from the 34 yard line and went up to the 6 yard line in 18 plays and 10 minutes, just barely making the down. On the six yard line the Jets attempted the field goal
but Folk’s attempt was unsuccessful again. The ball changed hands twice in the remaining four minutes but neither side was able to score.
Folk was finally able to redeem himself in the 13th minute of the 4th quarter to give the Jets a 7 points lead. The Browns had two and a half minutes to take the ball from the 41 yard line to the end zone to equalize and take the game
into overtime. Colt McCoy missed a few attempts but made the downs with increasingly longer passes as the clock ticked down. In the last minute McCoy threw 17, 18 and 3 yard passes consecutively for the touchdown with 48 seconds still remaining. McCoy threw
the 3 yard touchdown pass to Mohamed Massaquoi to equalize the scores again.
The two sides clashed with each other for 15 minutes of overtime. Neither defence allowed any major plays. In the 10th minute the Jets had an opportunity to win with a field goal but Nick Folk missed once again. Just a minute remaining the Browns
intercepted Sanchez on Cleveland’s 3 yard line. McCoy was sacked almost into the endzone and the Browns decided to take the punt. The kick was returned for 18 yards setting up the stage for Mark Sanchez to throw the game winning 37 yards touchdown pass to
Santonio Holmes.
The Jets won 26 against 20.
