New York Jets beat the Minnesota Vikings (Part One)
Brett Favre almost managed a comeback Monday night against the New York Giants but his efforts proved fruitless in one botched play. Still Favre showed what makes him one of NFLs greats. The Vikings started off rather poorly and so did Favre but he picked
up later and challenged the New York Jets.
“Disappointing, I suppose,” Favre said. “I was expecting we were going to win this football game. It was a great football game, and I wish we would have won it.” Great football it was indeed and a win that the Jets would be as pleased with as the Vikings
would be disappointed with. New York Coach Rex Ryan at least was unmistakably pleased. “Heck of a win” he said.
The first half of the game didn’t go so well for the Vikings. Nick Folk kicked off the game for New York but the 69 yards kick went out of bounds. The Vikings started the first drive with back to back penalties.
The first play was bit unorthodox. Favre handed off the ball to wide receiver Percy Harvin who handed it off the recently back wide receiver Randy Moss who then passed it right to Favre. Favre received the pass and ran out of bounds on the 49 yard line.
However an ineligible downfield pass made the play void and cost Minnesota 5 yards.
Immediately afterwards a false start penalty put the Vikings on the 30 yard line. The Viking running back Adrian Peterson rushed 4 yards but that too was lost due to another false start penalty on the Vikings.
Peterson rushed one yard to the 30 and on the 3rd and 20 Peterson was able to Rush all the way up to the 45 yard line but was stopped 5 yards short of the mark. Minnesota punted the ball instead of risking a turnover on the 45. After the punt
the Jets would start on the 21 yard line.
The Jets offense took off, well, kind of like a jet but fizzled out soon after.  Quarterback Mark Sanchez threw a 31 yards deep middle pass towards wide receiver Braylon Edwards. The Vikings defence was miles away from Edwards and the receiver was able to
comfortably catch the ball before he was run down by free safety Husain Abdullah and Madieu Williams. After that one big play the drive slowed down to a crawl and the Jets had to punt the ball.
The subsequent Minnesota offensive was even further short lived. The Vikings started on the 11 yard line and six yards later, in the third play Favre got sacked for 7 yards forcing the punt. Chris Kluwe kicked the ball just 37 yards which was also returned
7 yards by Kyle Wilson before he was pushed out of bounds.
The almost botched punt meant the Jets would start their drive well inside Minnesota’s half on their 41 yard line. The Jets’ running back LaDainian Tomlinson rushed 12 and 17 yards in 2 of 3 plays to put the Jets on Minnesota’s 11 yard line. Tomlinson then
rushed a yard but lost two in a pass from quarterback Sanchez.
The Jets took made the field goal attempt when their push for touchdown was met with heavy resistance. The attempt was successful and the first points came up on the board after ten minutes of play.
Neither team was able to score in the time left in the first quarter. Time enough for two drives. The Vikings’ drive was mostly uneventful but the Jets saw a bit more action in the final minutes of the drive.
Jets quarterback Sanchez was sacked for 8 yards in the second play by Ray Edwards and Jimmy Kennedy. Edwards rushed Sanchez from his right forcing him forward while Kennedy pushed through the middle and collided head on with Sanchez. The quarter ended while
the drive continued into the second quarter.
