New York Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie regards himself as the best – NFL News
As New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis is sidelined for the rest of the season, cornerback Antonio Cromartie is ready to place himself as the team’s top defensive player. Moreover, he believes that he is the best cornerback in the National Football League
(NFL).
This is according to the statement he gave to the New York Daily News on Friday, September 28, 2012. Cromartie said:
“I have said that I’m the second-best corner in the NFL. I’m not backing off what I said. I don’t care what anyone else believes... It’s my confidence in myself. I know what I’m capable of when I'm at the top of my game.”
The cornerback has been criticised for being inconsistent in his performances. Cromartie explained that lack of focus sometimes led to ‘Bad Cro’ moments.
Cromartie looked upbeat to be the guy to watch in the Gang Green’s defensive camp in absence of Revis.
Moreover, he also said that he never underestimated himself in presence of Revis. Cromartie said:
“My job is not to be like Revis. My job is to be Antonio Cromartie. I’m supposed to be me. And I’m going to continue to be me. This is Revis’ team. He’s been a consistent corner every single year. I haven’t been. I think I've been playing at a Pro Bowl level
so far.”
Cromartie’s performance has been up and down this season. Although he got one interception in the Jets' season opener against Buffalo Bills, he also gave away a 37-yard touchdown to Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Mike Wallace in Week 2.
The one-time All-Pro has played six seasons in the league. During this period, he got 233 tackles and 23 interceptions along with one forced fumble.
Cromartie was also invited to Pro Bowl in 2007. He was drafted by San Diego Chargers in first round (19th overall pick) of the 2000 draft.
