New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis cleared for physical activities – NFL News
New York Jets had a sigh of relief after cornerback Darrelle Revis was given clearance for workout and other physical activities on Wednesday, September 12, 2012.
However, Revis is still not allowed to do contact drills and participate in team practice. He is expected to return to normal practice on the weekend, but his availability for Week 2 game against Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, September 16, remains uncertain.
Revis was diagnosed to have suffered mild concussion after getting a head injury during the season opener against Buffalo Bills on Sunday, September 09.
The cornerback was trying to tackle running back C.J. Spiller during the game when went to the ground. At the same time linebacker Bart Scott was also following Spiller as he hit Revis’ head along the way.
Jets head coach Rex Ryan said that the team was not expecting Revis to work out during the practice session on Wednesday. Ryan said:
"As the week goes on, we hope he can progress further and do more things, but obviously, we will follow NFL protocol and lean on the trainers and doctors."
According to the National Football League (NFL) rules, a player cannot practise or play in a game until he is given clearance by the team doctor and an independent neurologist.
Revis was expected to talk with media on Wednesday, but decided against it. It was expected that he would address media after Thursday’s practice.
Ryan said that the best case scenario would be Revis starting rehab exercises on Thursday and then hopefully returning to full practice on Friday.
If Revis becomes unavailable for Week 2 game, he will probably be replaced by nickel back Kyle Wilson. He has started only 11 games in his entire career and played only two games as cornerback.
All-Pro cornerback Revis is a key component of Jets defensive play. He played a vital role in Jets biggest win in a season opener, 48-28, in Week 1 game.
Jets drafted Revis as the 14th overall pick in the first round of the 2007 draft. In his six seasons with the Jets, he has only missed two games due to injuries.
