New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis put on season-ending injured reserve – NFL News
After waiting for a long time, New York Jets have finally placed their star cornerback Darrelle Revis on the season-ending injured reserve (IR) list. Jets head coach Rex Ryan made the announcement on Friday, October 12, 2012.
Jets had been waiting for Revis to go through surgery so as to decide his roster spot.
Yet, after injury to safety Eric Smith, Jets needed to get another safety into the squad. Talking about Revis’ injury, Ryan said:
"I know I had said before about Darrelle that I'd like to wait for him to have surgery before we placed him on IR or not. Unfortunately with that time situation, you've had Eric Smith being out this week, we're going to need that roster spot."
Smith got injured during the practice session on Thursday, October 11. This made the Jets very weak at safety.
In order to strengthen their defence, Jets had to make roster space and to do that they have put Revis on IR.
Ryan also announced that Revis will go through surgery on Thursday, October 18.
Revis sprained his knee during Jets’ Week 4 loss against San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, September 30.
The coach also said he had misunderstood that there was a slight chance of the player’s return at the time of playoffs, if Jets managed to qualify for it. Ryan said:
“When I said there was a point-zero-zero-two chance, it’s not that high. In the best interests of the organization and Darrelle, we’ll place him on IR. He won’t be designated for return. I was holding out hope, but the more information we got, the more you
realized it wouldn’t be good for Darrelle either.”
In place of Revis, Jets have added rookie safety Antonio Allen from practice squad. Allen was drafted by Jets in the seventh round of this year’s draft. Allen will play the Jets Week 6 game on Sunday, October 14, against Indianapolis Colts.
